She explained that the event provides an important platform for rural enterprises to showcase their products and services to key buyers and potential trading partners. She added “I have no doubt that this year’s tradeshow will effectively provide a platform for the exhibitors to interact and forge important partnerships for business development and economic growth”.
Ms. Tetteh advised the exhibitors to use the opportunity to advertise their products, network with others, learn from each other and find markets for their products. She further advised; “It is through your determination and commitment to invest and trade that will make your business thrive in this competitive environment...You should not concentrate on the immediate sales during the event, but ensure that you have made enough contacts and business linkages that would provide sustainable market outlets for your products”.
Ms. Hanna Tetteh, said government recognizes the REP as part of its strategy to reduce poverty through self employment, explaining that Government through the new local government law (LI 1961) is upgrading the two implementing units of REP (Business Advisory Centres and Rural Technology Facilities) into the decentralized Department for Trade, Industry and Tourism under the local government structure to deal with issues related to trade and private sector enterprise.
According to Ms. Tetteh, the Government through the Ministry of Trade and Industry has put measures in place to upscale the REP into national programme to cover all districts and municipal assemblies in the country.
She noted that the Ghanaian business environment is dominated by Micro, Medium and Small Enterprises (MMSEs) for which reason government, through the Ministry of Trade and Industry, is pursuing programmes such as the Trade Sector Support Programmes, the World Bank/IMF MMSE Project, the Private Sector Development Strategy II and others to provide the needed technical skills and financial assistance to MMSEs.
In his welcome address, the District Chief Executive for Kassena-Nankana East, Mr. Emmanuel Andema said since the commissioning of a Rural Technology Facility by REP in the district in 2007, as many as 1,303 artisans have upgraded their skills in various trades with about 377 given NVTI certificates. Also 1,552 people benefitted from training activities such as batik, tie & dye, pomade making and others. Hon.
